HDR’ing

I’ve been trying out a technique called HDR. It comes down to taking a couple of shots of the same subject, but at different exposures. The whole idea is a bit tricky if, unlike some of us, you don’t have your eye glued to a viewfinder a few times a day. The problem is that people forget how amazing eyes really are.

What you see through these two twisty balls is more than most lenses and/or cameras can handle. We are able to look at something and see most of the subject(s) clearly, without bits being too over- or underexposed. Cameras can’t. So you often end up with the foreground being underexposed for the clouds to look like something, or the air not having any definition or cloudiness to give the foreground and subject some detail.

With HDR you merge the shots to get all of that in one shot.

By the way – I’ve decided to start a photoblog on wordpress, so I can still have both. I’ll run my own .co.za next year. I thought I’d post some of my attempts the last couple o’ weeks to give you an idea of what I’m working on.
